6/8/2014 This lake is north west of Standing bear lake. It at least in part seems to be surrounded by houses. The rest of this area seems fairly swampy. There are no docks, and the water near the shore is very shallow. Getting on may be difficult. This entire lake is shallow, in fact. In most of the areas I sampled, it doesn't get much deeper than four or five feet deep. There is lots of logs and down trees, so I think this area may have been more recently flooded. There are massive trees sporadically through this area. Ive been meaning to make it to this island for some time. It's by far the largest lake island around Omaha. There are several places to get on it. This small bay like area pictures appears to be the best. Deeper boats may have a difficult time with the fallen logs in the water. The island itself is mostly overgrown with some clearing on the more south side. Shotgun shells and beer cans and an old tire, mostly. Based on the age of some of these things, I imagine not too many people get on this island. |

5/22/2014 Looked at the southern creek a couple days previous. The pass underneath the bridge was blocked by logs in the water. Could not saw though with my small saw. Came back with D and his saw the next day and broke through on the southern tunnel. The creek is fairly wide and deep. Made it up a considerable way, with a few low hanging trees that might be a problem in a few years. Some branches looked cut, like some people have been boating through recently. I assume they didn't come from the lake as the logs made the path impassable. Reached a stopping point as it was late and the water was getting thick with brush. Note: There is kind of a Lean-to by the water. I had been in this area on foot and inspected. Some of the logs appeared to be large enough so that an adult would have to have lifted them. So this might be a camp ground. I had also seen a dog wandering around this area. |

9/12/2018 I had made it to the dam from the main lake a few years back but never recorded it. The water level was recently high, and the lakes were starting to get shut down due to zebra mussels, so I figured I should document this new point. The first time I made it to the base of the dam of the north lake the water level was so high I had to lay on by board to get through the tunnel. This time I just had to kneel. I'm not sure what had happened to the log that was previously blocking the path, but it has been fairly clear here the last few times I made it up this creek in recent years. Its just a matter of waiting for the water level to get high. |
